———————————

Yuko Kono - not to be confused with Yoko Ono - is one of many artists part of the Why Don’t You Believe Me? family.

The Melbourne-based WDYBM released a 2012 sampler, which you can grab here for whatever price you like, and it also features Velcro, Emma Russack, R.L. Jones from The Middle East plus more.

For now, enjoy the dulcet tones of Yuko Kono. You can hear more of her music via Soundcloud.

Rat & Co - Forget Never...

Rat & Co - Forget Never Forget

Rat & Co is a brand new project from Melbourne’s Joshua Delaney (Chet Faker’s bassist), that sees him building sweltering soundscapes with a homemade touch.

‘Forget Never Forget’ begins with rich harmonies and very minimal instrumentation but once you hit the 1.30 minute mark, the song shifts into a cacophony of beats, staccato vocals and hazy synths - total bliss!

Give Rat & Co some love via Unearthed or check out their Soundcloud page for more.

Chet Faker -...

Chet Faker - Archangel

Chet Faker – the bearded Melbournian lad who makes women weak at their knees. Yeah, that one – has launched a new Live Sessions series, which sees him and his band playing a couple of his tracks live at Newstead Butter Factory.

The first of these live video sessions sees them playing a cover of Burial’s ‘Archangel’. An absolutely raw, stunning and spine-tingling rendition. The best part about Chet Faker’s covers is that he makes the original song his own.

Chet Faker told 2SER that he’s been working on a debut album and will hopefully release it ‘soon’.

Sunny - Just Say...

Sunny - Just Say It

———————————

Sticking to the theme of summery tunes, here’s Perth band Sunny and their delicious track ‘Just Say It’.

The two-piece consists of Sean (Braves) and Pat (Lazy Lamb) and together they create the sweetest lo-fi pop!

Perth has delivered a crazy amount of good bands this year, mostly of the hazy-psychedelic sort.

Sunny have released an EP which this track features on - you can grab it here for free. Give ‘em some love over at Unearthed.

The Laughing Leaves -...

The Laughing Leaves - Everyday

———————————

Garage-surf band The Laughing Leaves have produced a killer tune for your summer.

Filled with hip-shaking guitar rhythms and ridiculously catchy riffs, ‘Everyday’ is pure, raw jangly-pop bliss.

Hailing from Geelong, Victoria, their influences - including The Beach Boys and Nuggets just to name a few - are apparent, and it’ll be exciting to see what else they’ve got up their sleeve come 2013.

They’ll be releasing a 7” vinyl EP in March next year. Keep up to date with them via Unearthed.

Jeremy Neale - A Love Affair To Keep You...

Jeremy Neale - A Love Affair To Keep You There

Brisbane solo artist Jeremy Neale is back, and still full of charisma and catchy pop offerings as heard in his new single ^^^!

‘A Love Affair To Keep You There’ is the first taste of his upcoming record, due to drop in the first half of 2013. You may know him best from his previous hit ‘Darlin’ or from his work with Velociraptor.

If you want to reacquaint yourself with the old Jeremy Neale, he’s giving away ‘Darlin’ for free via Bandcamp - or you can download/listen to/rate some others tracks on his Unearthed page.

The Chemist - Spray Paint Or...

The Chemist - Spray Paint Or Praise

———————————

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from Perth-based outfit The Chemist. But just yesterday they dropped a new single (and video), ‘Spray Paint Or Praise (Still A Statue In The Wind)’.

The single is a flirtatious blues number, tinged with soulful vocals and dirty, gritty guitar work. It’s a stunning comeback!

Back in 2010 the three-piece dropped two EPs, ‘The Wolves’ Howls Shatter The Old Glass Moon’ and ‘Lullabies’, the latter featuring ‘Lullaby #1 (Mercy)’ - which had a great run on local and national radio.

You can download ‘Spray Paint Or Praise’ here for a limited time.

Axolotl -...

Axolotl - Debris

Axolotl, which is actually a weird type of underwater species that can regenerate its limbs - is also a band! A very good band, in fact.

The six-piece are based in Melbourne and produce dark, whimsical electronic-pop. They’ve got an EP on the way, to be titled ‘Autonomy’.

They’ve already dropped two incredible tracks from that EP - ‘Electricity’ and ‘Garden Lane’ - and ‘Debris’ is an exclusive track for The Soul Of Melbourne compilation, which showcases some of the best soul, funk & R’n’B artists of the city.

You can listen to more of their stuff over at their Unearthed page.

Aerobi -...

Aerobi - Willow

———————————

Aerobi are a gorgeous four-piece outfit from Sydney who produce some pure (and loveable) folk tunes.

‘Willow’ is their latest offering, featuring a frolicking banjo that runs to and from the melody, capturing a youthful and liberating vibe - and there’s just always something quite magical about the banjo.

You can give them some love

Hailing from Brisbane, The Older Kids give you a raw slice of indie-rock, veering towards a DIY aesthetic.

Their laid back vocals and melodies sit comfortably on the simple instrumental arrangements - exactly what A Tuesday Morning would sound like (I presume, if you don’t work full-time).

The duo - Steven Carter and Bryce Kelb - take inspiration from folk/rock legends of the past including The Beatles, Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones.

Enjoy, enjoy!

The White Rose Project -...

The White Rose Project - Teeth

1. Three words to describe your music: Funky, intense, unexpected.

2. Greatest musical guilty pleasure? We all listen to heaps of music we’re too ashamed to share, hahaha.

3. Funniest thing that’s happened on tour: Nothing comes to mind straight up! We’ve all been too drunk to play at certain times though, and there is definitely so many funny events to come!

4. Couldn’t live without… Each other!

5. Where you’d like to be in 10 years? Sure we’d all like to be super rich and famous, who wouldn’t!? but realistically, all in Melbourne, still jamming our hearts out together, hoping for the best.

Atolls is a new three-piece based in Melbourne - a new project from King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard bassist Lucas Skinner.

Their jangly guitar pop tunes are perfect for a hazy Sunday afternoon, and ‘Mumble’ reeks with a joyous summery vibe.

They are also not afraid to up the ante in terms of fuzzy guitar interludes.

———————————

Their band name may sound frightening, but I can assure you they’re not. The Melbourne outfit, led by Yen Nguyen, have just released their latest record ‘Watercolours’.

Grabbing the title track of the new album, you can hear their sweetly composed melodies and harmonies (sung by three vocalists) up against complex Radiohead-like percussive rhythms. It’s a charming introduction to the record; its soundscape qualities washing over you as it flows from one musical idea to the next.

You can purchase ‘Watercolours’ here or see Mechanical Pterodactyl live in Sydney at The Newsagency on Wednesday 7 November.

Tigerilla - Re-Arrange My Heart feat....

Tigerilla - Re-Arrange My Heart feat.
Hailing from Adelaide, Tigerilla produces emotion-heavy and super smooth hip hop that treads along the lines of The Weeknd and Frank Ocean.

His bass-y beats and gorgeous vocals coupled with Allday’s raps work an absolute treat. The Australian music landscape is well and truly blossoming with artists such as these two. Listen to his other track ‘Awaken The Giant’ right here. To be honest, I was stuck on which track to choose, as both are amazing - so get listening!

The Familiars - Your...

The Familiars - Your Friends

1. Three words to describe your music: Melody, harmony, rhythm.

2. Greatest musical guilty pleasure? Katy Perry.

3. Funniest thing that’s happened on tour: We just recently had a show at The Great Northern in Byron Bay and during our last song the crowd got a bit overexcited and invaded the stage and danced and sung with us. Security wasn’t too impressed with that…

4. Couldn’t live without… Air.

5. Where you’d like to be in 10 years? Our aim is to play the first gig on the planet Mars.

———————————

Nic Cahill is a 19 year old electronic producer from Melbourne who is currently making some of the most stunning and classiest trip hop in Australian music, under the name Eye Of Zion.

Taking influence from Boards Of Canada, Aesop Rock and MF Doom, he liquifies hip hop into chillwave with added psychedelic moments - which equates to absolute aural bliss.

Listen to some of his other tracks here and lose yourself in his otherworldly imagination.

Gnome - Dew...

Gnome - Dew Drop

———————————

You may remember Freya Berkhout from experimental pop outfit kyü. Well, she’s teamed up with her brother, Elias Berkhout, who together now perform under the name Gnome.

The intertwining male and female vocal harmonies are stunning, and their simplistic yet haunting electro-pop treads along the same path as The Knife.

‘Dew Drop’ is the first single from the Sydney-based duo, and you can download it for free right here.

Fleur Wiber - There Is Always...

Fleur Wiber - There Is Always Hope

———————————

Previously performing and writing under the band name Fleur & The Courgettes, Sydney-based singer/songwriter Fleur Wiber has now stepped out under her own solo name.

Wiber produces some of the most stunning yet haunting folk music. I stumbled upon this song on Unearthed and was captivated by her mysterious vocals, so honest in its delivery.

No news of any gigs just yet, but head over to her Soundcloud page to hear some more tunes.

Train Robbers - If You Want Me Let Me...

Train Robbers - If You Want Me Let Me Know

———————————

From Sydney, Train Robbers give you a little bit of psych-rock and a little bit of indie-pop. Perfect doses of each, really.

Originally called The Archerbolds, they’ve been floating around the scene for the past two years and now have a demo out, which you can download for free.

‘If You Want Me Let Me Know’ is undoubtedly a highlight from the mini-album, with its giddy bassline and cool, casual vocals. The four-piece are keeping it simple, and it’s an impressive first taste of what is yet to come from the outfit.

Classik Nawu - How We...

Classik Nawu - How We Live

———————————

So much funk and soul in this outfit, it’s insane! Brisbane-based Classik Nawu are all about keeping old school urban music alive - and they do it so well. Listening to their music is like revisiting an era that you’ve almost forgotten about.

Their flavour is jam-packed with fresh sounds of jazz, funk, reggae, hip hop and r’n’b. Glazed over their fun melodies are the smoothest of raps.

The five-piece (two of whom are brothers) are playing a couple of gigs here and there in Brissie - so try and catch them when you can, QLD folk. And in the meantime, give them some love on their triple j Unearthed page.
